Abstract
This proposal outlines a final year project in computer science aimed at developing smart animatronic eyes, leveraging advanced technologies such as computer vision, robotics, and artificial intelligence (AI). The project addresses the need for lifelike and interactive animatronic systems by focusing on the creation of expressive and responsive robotic eyes capable of emulating human-like behaviors and emotions. Through the integration of sophisticated sensing mechanisms, real-time processing algorithms, and dynamic control strategies, the proposed smart animatronic eyes aim to enhance human-robot interaction experiences in various applications, including entertainment, education, and assistive technologies.
Introduction
Animatronics, the integration of robotic mechanisms into animatronic figures, plays a crucial role in creating immersive and engaging experiences in industries such as film, theme parks, and museums. While traditional animatronic systems have achieved remarkable realism in terms of movement and appearance, the incorporation of intelligent behaviors and interactive features remains a significant challenge. This project aims to push the boundaries of animatronic technology by focusing on the development of smart animatronic eyes capable of perceiving their environment, interpreting social cues, and exhibiting nuanced expressions akin to human behavior.
Problem
Conventional animatronic eyes lack the ability to respond dynamically to external stimuli or interact with users in a meaningful way. As a result, animatronic figures often appear static or scripted, limiting their capacity to engage audiences on a deeper emotional level. Additionally, the complexity of human-eye movements and expressions poses technical challenges in replicating these behaviors convincingly using robotic mechanisms. Addressing these limitations requires the integration of advanced sensing, processing, and control techniques to imbue animatronic eyes with intelligence and adaptability.
Aim
The primary aim of this project is to develop smart animatronic eyes capable of exhibiting lifelike behaviors and interactions through the integration of cutting-edge technologies. By leveraging computer vision algorithms, sensor fusion techniques, and machine learning models, the project seeks to enable animatronic eyes to perceive their surroundings, track objects and faces, and generate expressive movements and expressions in real time. Furthermore, the project aims to design intuitive interfaces and control mechanisms for users to interact with and customize the behavior of animatronic eyes according to their preferences and applications.
Objectives
1. To conduct a comprehensive review of existing animatronic technologies, focusing on the capabilities and limitations of current systems.
2. To design and fabricate a prototype of smart animatronic eyes equipped with high-resolution cameras, depth sensors, and servo motors for movement control.
3. To develop computer vision algorithms for object detection, face tracking, and facial expression recognition to enable responsive behaviors in animatronic eyes.
4. To implement machine learning models for personality emulation and emotion synthesis, allowing animatronic eyes to exhibit varied expressions and behaviors based on contextual cues.
5. To integrate sensor data fusion techniques for robust perception and decision-making capabilities in dynamic environments.
6. To design user-friendly interfaces and interaction modes for users to customize and control the behavior of animatronic eyes in real time.
7. To evaluate the performance and user experience of the smart animatronic eyes through user studies and demonstrations in various contexts, including entertainment venues, educational settings, and interactive exhibits.
Research
The proposed research will draw upon interdisciplinary approaches from robotics, computer vision, machine learning, and human-computer interaction. The initial phase will involve prototyping and experimentation with animatronic mechanisms, including the integration of cameras, sensors, and actuators for eye movement and expression control. Subsequently, research will focus on developing algorithms for real-time perception, interpretation, and generation of expressive behaviors based on environmental stimuli and user interactions. Machine learning techniques, such as deep neural networks, will be employed to model and synthesize complex expressions and personality traits in animatronic eyes. The research will also explore methods for user engagement and interaction design, incorporating principles of human psychology and emotion communication to enhance the believability and appeal of animatronic characters. Additionally, ethical considerations, such as privacy preservation and user consent, will be carefully addressed throughout the research process to ensure responsible deployment and use of smart animatronic eyes in public spaces.
